The local context
Hlanzoun is a rare and remarkable swamp forest in West Africa. It covers an area of 2,945 hectares, including a central core of almost 900 hectares. This swamp forest is permanently fed by the river Hlan. Over time, Hlanzoun has been fragmented, dividing the forest into numerous isolated patches. Hlanpopototo is one of these islets, covering an area of 24 hectares.
Project objectives
Presentation of the project :
Having enabled the purchase of the 24 ha of Hlanpopototo and financed 2 ecoguards to watch over the forest, HUMY and its local partner ECODEC are now starting to develop income-generating activities in the neighbouring villages, such as bee-keeping.
The overall project for this area is to better demarcate the 24 ha, increase income-generating activities and develop a forest restoration plan.

Already completed
HUMY, Thanks to the support of patrons, the company was able to finance the purchase of the 24 hectares.
Two eco-guards are already funded to look after the site. Among other things, they are discussing with Peuhl herders how to avoid zebu grazing in this area, which would be detrimental to the natural regeneration of the plant cover.
Coming soon
Several beekeepers are in the process of recruiting to generate economic activity and enable a more regular presence in the area, which may discourage poaching.
They will receive training from an experienced beekeeper and will be provided with all the equipment they need to start their new business.
