Support for the project to develop local and responsible tourism in Phnom Kulen

The Phnom Kulen plateau is one of the cradles of the prestigious Angkorian civilisation. Numerous remains can be found in the forests of the eastern part of the national park, dating from the 10th and 11th centuries and thus predating the city of Angkor.

The local context

The study, conservation and enhancement of Phnom Kulen's rich archaeological heritage are the very reasons for the creation of ADF Kulen. Long forgotten and neglected, the temples, hermitages and sculptures that dot the Kulen forests deserve to be protected and enhanced. This unique archaeological heritage was the birthplace of the Angkorian civilisation. To this end, ADF and the Cambodian government have set up a network of «Archeology Protected Areas» (APAs) to protect the remains and their surroundings. Tourism has developed on these isolated sites in the forest, but non-local and «illegitimate» guides are cornering part of the market.

Project objectives

Supporting ADF Kulen's initiatives to develop responsible tourism that benefits the villages of Popel and Anlong Thom.

Issues

The development of tourism activities in the villages of Popel and Anlong Thom is helping to improve the incomes of local people. In addition, the fact that money is being generated by offering tours in the forests bordering the villages demonstrates that protecting the forest can also be profitable. To this end, two «community tourism centres» have been opened in Anlong Thom and Popel to direct tourists to the communities concerned and provide reliable, high-quality information. Discovering the area's archaeological heritage is also an opportunity to see beautiful forests that are still home to rare species such as the Bonneted Gibbon.
